Critical Pedagogy on Colonial Latin America Workshop

The Southwest Seminar Consortium on Colonial Latin America is pleased to invite proposals for a spring workshop focused on the teaching and pedagogy of colonialism. This inaugural workshop is a part of wider initiative that aims to promote and elevate the critical scholarship of teaching with scholarly research and will lead to a published forum (edited volume or themed journal issue) that prioritizes original research and critical resources that support the teaching of colonialism in the early modern Americas, particularly in Latin America. The workshop will be held in person at the University of Arizona in Tucson on March 10-11, 2023.
The two-day Critical Pedagogy workshop will focus on helping invited participants refine their pieces for publication. Participants will share manuscripts and provide critical feedback on teaching-related resources, such as on original scholarship, annotated translations, teaching activities, and lesson plans. We are particularly interested in works that prioritize active learning, experiential teaching, and collaborative work; highlight colonial primary sources, such as textual and visual resources and their use in classroom settings; or reframe discussions of colonialism that center the voices of non-Spanish actors. We welcome proposals from scholars and teachers working on any part of colonial Latin America and the Atlantic World and from different disciplinary perspectives, including history, literary criticism, art history, musicology, geography, bibliography, museology, librarianship, and anthropology. K-12 teachers and Community College Instructors are especially encouraged to apply.
Potential topics include, but are not limited, to the following:

Studies of the history of education in and about the colonial period

Assessments of teaching assignments and pedagogical techniques

Translations of unique, unpublished, or unavailable textual primary sources

Analyses on the formation of major teaching and research collections of original sources used to enhance instruction in area studies

Assignments that center visual primary sources, including maps, paintings, and illustrations as well as all manner of material artifacts

Engagement with published resources and documentary collections, including textbooks, primary source readers, digital exhibits, and online archives
-
Specific assignments and lesson plans focused on colonialism
About the Southwest Seminar:
The Southwest Seminar Consortium on Colonial Latin America is a collaboration of scholars interested in the interdisciplinary study of colonialism in the early modern Americas. Housed in the Center for Latin American Studies at the University of Arizona, the consortium is supported by key member institutions, including Omohundro Institute for Early American History and Culture, Texas Christian University, Texas State University, the University of Arizona, University of California-San Diego, University of Texas-El Paso, University of Texas-San Antonio, and Utah Valley University. Founded in 2014, the organization hosts regular meetings focused on new research on colonial Latin America and leads several publication initiatives, including the New Colonial Histories of Latin America book series with Routledge Press. The seminar prioritizes supporting and mentoring new research from scholars of diverse backgrounds, ranks, disciplines.
