In his book Sounds of Crossing: Music, Migration, and the Aural Poetics of Huapango Arribeño (Duke 2017), Dr. Alex E. Chávez explores the contemporary politics of Mexican migrant cultural expression manifest in huapango arribeño, a musical genre originating from north-central Mexico. A musician himself, Chávez has placed sound at the center of his artistic practice, scholarship, and publicly engaged work. In this presentation, he will discuss how the musico-poetic design and performance of huapango arribeño produce shared sentiments of intimacy, conviviality, and companionship and how he has brought to bear these insights in both his academic and creative work as a means of hearing across multiple types of borders.
