Please join us on Friday, April 21, 2023 for the inaugural Paths Across the Pacific Speaker Series on Asia-Latin American relations featuring Dr. Mariana de Jesús Escalante, professor of Political Science at the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México, and with a virtual presentation by Dr. Jesús Seade Kuri, Mexican Ambassador to China. Sergio Puig, Professor of Law & Director of the International Trade and Business Law Program at the University of Arizona will moderate the talk.
This free event will take place at the Health Sciences Information Building Forum (1670 E. Drachman) and is open to the public. The talk will begin at 3:00 pm, followed by a reception with refreshments at 4:30pm.
The Paths Across the Pacific is a collaboration between the newly formed Center for East Asian Studies and the Center for Latin American Studies with the purpose of bringing greater understanding and visibility to Asia-Latin American relations. This program is made possible through a U.S. Department of Education Title VI National Resource Grant.

Dr. Mariana de Jesús Escalante is a full-time professor at the Center for International Relations of the Faculty of Political and Social Sciences at the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM). She obtained her PhD in Political and Social Sciences from UNAM and a master’s in international relations from Peking University, in the Chinese program. Dr. Escalante is a member of the National System of Researchers of the National Council of Science and Technology of Mexico. Her lines of research focus on Chinese foreign policy, Chinese nationalism, Confucianism, contemporary Chinese society, mutual perspectives between China and Mexico, and women in China.
Dr. Jesús Seade Kuri is an economist, diplomat, and politician with a long history of trade negotiations and management of international financial crises. He is, since December 1, 2018, Undersecretary for North America in Mexico’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs (SRE). On June 8, 2020, Dr. Seade was officially nominated by the Mexican government for General Director of the World Trade Organization (WTO). In March of 2018, he was invited by the then presidential candidate Andrés Manuel López Obrador as his representative in the renegotiation of the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA). A Mexican and Lebanese national, Ambassador Seade has lived for extended periods of time in Great Britain, Switzerland, USA, Hong Kong SAR, the People's Republic of China and its native Mexico. A prominent part of his career has been in high-level positions in the three main international economic organizations: the World Bank (WB), the International Monetary Fund (IMF), and the World Trade Organization (WTO).
Dr. Sergio Puig is Evo DeConcini Professor of Law. He is the Director of the International Trade and Business Law Program at the University of Arizona as well as the Co-Editor in Chief of the Journal of International Economic Law. Before joining the University of Arizona, Professor Puig was the teaching fellow of the Program in International Legal Studies (SPILS) at Stanford and served as a lecturer in law at Duke and Stanford Universities. Before entering academia, he practiced law in Mexico and the USA, and worked at the World Bank and International Centre for Settlement of Investment Disputes (ICSID). Professor Puig is the co-founder and current Vice-President of tradelab.org, an organization to facilitate assistance in international trade and investment law matters by law school clinics. He is the author of At the Margins of Globalization: Indigenous Peoples and International Economic Law as well as many articles in specialized journals and book chapters available on SSRN.
