This talk presents the findings of an initial exploration into what analyst Laura Méndez describes as a transnational coalition of ultraconservatives, unliberal governments in Europe, and libertarian and anarcho-capitalists in Latin (and Anglo) America. Exploring public speeches of conservative Spanish politicians, he shows that the Spanish far-right has established a disinformation campaign grounded on historical revisionism and alternative truths aimed at forging their version of “national” political and spiritual unity. Moreover, he analyzes images of “Hispanist” demonstrations in Peru and Latin American politicians’ endorsement of Santiago Abascal (leader of Spain’s far-right party, Vox), to illustrate the success of such a campaign.
Dr. Juan Carlos De Orellana Sánchez received his B.A. degree and Licenciatura title in History from the Pontificia Universidad Católica del Perú, and his Ph.D. in History from the University of Texas at Austin. He is currently pursuing an M.S. in Information Science at the University of Arizona. He has written about political negotiation, conceptions of corruption in New Spain and Peru, and the relationship between functionaries’ movement, experience, and meritocracy in the colonial government. He is developing two research projects: Guns, Women, and Weed. The Language of Crime and Rights in Contemporary Texas; and Leftist Ideologies in American Political Parlance.
