LAS Students Invited to Meet with Mexican Foreign Secretary and US Ambassador

Early in February, a small group of Mexican/Mexican American students studying in the LAS department were invited to meet the Mexican  Secretary of Foreign Relations and Ambassador to the US from Mexico. The five students and LAS Assistant Director Colin Deeds headed out to the Tucson Mexican Consulate on the same day that they received the last-minute invitation.  Secretary Ruiz-Massieu and Ambassador Basáñez  wished to discuss the students experiences studying at UA. They also wanted to know what the Mexican government could do to support them or to strengthen 100,000 Strong in the Americas, Obama’s educational initiative to increase study abroad and cultural exchange between Latin America and the United States.   The event that brought the officials to Tucson was related to the opening of a new call center at the Mexican Consulate, where LAS student Patricia Ahumada is an intern.   It was a great opportunity for the students to be able to share their opinions on education and student support directly with government officials.
