1. The University of Arizona Center for Middle Eastern Studies and Center for Latin American Studies are holding two half-day workshops, one for elementary teachers and another for secondary teachers. Both will be held on Saturday, September 14th, in Marshall 490 (845 N. Park Ave.) in Tucson. Each will include 3 hours of sessions and a "networking lunch" (elementary and secondary teachers together). The total cost is $10, which includes lunch. You will receive FOUR professional development credits for attending either session. You can pay at the door, but please RSVP in advance to email@example.com.
1a. Elementary teachers: "Middle Eastern and Latin American Studies in the Elementary Classroom" is a session focusing on integrating multi-cultural education within the elementary Language Arts and STEM curriculum. The session will run from 12 noon until 4:00 pm. 12:00 - 1:00 is the networking lunch; 1:00 - 4:00 will include descriptions and demonstrations of lesson plans and materials.
1b. Secondary teachers: "Disease in History: Examples from Latin America and the Middle East" is a session on high-interest topics that can be adapted for various grade levels (middle school, high school) and disciplines (English, history, geography, science). The session will run from 9:00 am until 1:00 pm. Structured talks are from 9:00 - 12:00; the networking lunch is from 12:00 - 1:00.
