Juan Valdes

Dr. Juan B. Valdés is Professor in the Department of Hydrology and Water Resources at the University of Arizona. He is also the Director of the NSF Science and Technology Center SAHRA (Sustainability of Semi-Arid Hydrology and Riparian Areas) at the University of Arizona. Previously he was a Professor and Head of the Department of Civil Engineering and Engineering Mechanics for 1997-2008. He has held academic and administrative positions at Simon Bolivar University (Caracas, Venezuela) where he was the head of the graduate program in hydrology and water resources and at Texas A&M University where he was the head of the Environmental, Ocean and Water Resources Division, in the Department of Civil Engineering, and Associate Director of the Climate System Research Program. He is a Fellow of the American Society of Civil Engineers and the American Geophysical Union and a member of the International Water Academy. His undergraduate degree in Civil Engineering is from the Catholic University of Cordoba (Argentina) and his Master of Science in Civil Engineering and PhD in Water Resources are from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).

Research Interests:  Stochastic and Deterministic Hydrology, Flood Forecasting, Analysis, Synthesis and Sampling of Hydrologic Processes, Latin America Analysis, drought characterization and mitigation, environmental risk assessment.
