The Study of the US Institute (SUSI) brings Indigenous and Afro-descendant student leaders from Latin America for a 5-week certificate program sponsored by the US State Department. Students learn about civil rights in the US, Native American tribes in Arizona, participate in leadership for peace workshops and hands-on training in sustainable technologies.
Graduate and undergraduate students from the LAS and Education departments act as peer mentors and cultural liasons for the visiting students. Spanish skills are required as well as the possibility of bringing two or three SUSI students to meet mentor families during one weekend. If you are interested in becoming a peer mentor for the institute, contact project coordinator Dr. Katie O'Brien at firstname.lastname@example.org or Center for Latin American Studies Director Dr. Vasquez-Leon at email@example.com.
