Recent research has shown that the private sector can play an important role in fostering peace. Directly, firms can engage in corporate diplomacy to pressure parties to negotiate and aid negotiations and post-conflict development. Indirectly, firms can address local grievances, diffuse international norms, and promote development, among others. In spite of this, firms are largely ignored by political scientists. Therefore, the relation between business and peace is studied almost exclusively in business schools, which lack the expertise on violent political conflict. This talk focuses on promoting interdisciplinary work on corporate peacebuilding by showing the advances and projections of an ongoing research agenda in collaboration with political scientists and business scholars.

Santiago Sosa is an Assistant Professor of Global Management at Universidad EAFIT (Medellín, Colombia). A Fulbright scholar, he received his Ph.D. in Political Science from Rice University in 2018. He is the founder and director of the Latin American Peace Science Society, a scholarly network dedicated to the scientific study of peace and conflict. Santiago’s research focuses on causes and consequences of violent conflict, as well as the impact of the private sector on war and peace. His latest projects study ex-combatant economic reintegration, ex-combatant entrepreneurship as peacebuilding, corporate peacebuilding, and the impact of firms on crime prevention and rehabilitation. Currently, he is a Fulbright visiting researcher at Loyola University Chicago in the Political Science Department and the Quinlan School of Business.
