Since the early 1990s, US and Australian border enforcement agencies have invested millions of dollars in tv and radio ads, feature-length films, and public art installations and theater performances with the goal of convincing potential migrants and their families to stay 'home'. This talk examines the rise of this novel enforcement strategy, how it has shifted the geographies of border enforcement, and why this should be of concern to those committed to im/migration justice.
Jill Williams is a Senior Research Associate at the Acacia Center for Justice and Associate Research Professor at the Southwest Institute for Research on Women at the University of Arizona. She is trained as a feminist political geographer and has researched contemporary US border enforcement practices for over a decade. Past research has examined the criminalization of humanitarian aid and uneven practices of migrant detention and release in southern Arizona.
