International investigators spent nearly a decade investigating the disappearance of 43 students from Ayotzinapa, Mexico, presenting their final report in July 2023. Hear from a member of the investigating commission on the complicity and cover-up of the Mexican state, as well as how relatives and human rights activists continue to press for truth and justice in a case that shocked Mexico and the world.
Carlos Martín Beristain was a member of the Interdisciplinary Group of Independent Experts established by the Inter-American Human Rights Commission to investigate the Ayotzinapa case. A medical doctor and social psychologist, he has more than 30 years experience working with human rights victims, including serving on Colombia’s Truth Commission, coordinating Guatemala’s “Nunca Más” human rights report, and collaborating with human rights documentation projects and the integral attention to victims in Peru, Paraguay, Ecuador, El Salvador, Nicaragua, and the Sahara.
