This presentation analyzes the intricate relationship between far-right political platforms and digital media in Brazil and Latin America. Focusing on the connection between digital spaces and the rise of far-right movements, this presentation will explore the role of social media and online communities and applications in fostering and amplifying far-right ideologies. It will investigate specific instances and influential figures where digital media has significantly contributed to disseminating and reinforcing far-right narratives in Brazil and Latin America and reflect on societal, political, and cultural causes and consequences of this relationship. By exploring these themes, this presentation offers insights into the complex dynamics between digital media and the far right, contributing to a deeper understanding of contemporary political landscapes in Brazil and Latin America.
Dr. Arthur Ituassu is an Associate Professor at the Pontifical Catholic University of Rio de Janeiro (PUC-Rio) and an Associated Researcher at the National Institute of Science and Technology on Digital Democracy (INCT.DD). He served as Vice-President (2015-2017) and President (2017-2019) of the Brazilian Association of Researchers in Communication and Politics (COMPOLÍTICA) and is also a member of the World Association for Public Opinion Research (WAPOR) and Fulbright Visiting Scholar (Spring 2024) at the University of Arizona.
