The Latin American Studies Department is proud to announce that Dr. Matías Bianchi, a faculty member in LAS and the School for Government and Public Policy at the University of Arizona, has been asked by the Secretary General of Uruguay to provide strategic advice to the Organization of American States (OAS).
The newly elected Secretary General, Luis Almagro, also the ex-Foreign Affairs Minister of Uruguay, is pursuing major reforms aiming at bringing the OAS closer to the realities, expectations and needs of the hemisphere´s 21st century society. Dr Bianchi will be providing expert advice on how to bring about this change. He has been tasked with studying current sociopolitical phenomena that are occurring in Latin America and to propose reforms and initiatives on how can the OAS can take full advantage of is structure and mandate to promote democracy in the hemisphere.
Dr Bianchi has extensive experience in the region working with emerging leaders, politicians, activists, especially in the use of technology for improving the quality of democracy. He is the director of Asuntos del Sur, a regional think tank with which he has worked in the field in over 15 countries in the region in the last 5 years. He is also the author of "Democracy in the margins of democracy: activism in the digital age".
